It is late winter in Cropers Wood.  Here the young shout for joy as
they tumble form their sleds into the warm embrace of their family
kitchens to be fattened with maple sugar and hot cider.  Farther
afield the lumbermen drop the trees their grandpapys planted to supply
the Shire with fuel and cabinets and the few spears needed by the
militia of this backwater paradise.  There is no fear in the
children's' cries, no hesitation in the call of "Timber!" that resounds
in the woods.

All the fear and trepidation is in the heart of the Shire.  Tonight
the council meet in Town Hall with Mayor Mariso Redbottom to hear a
report from the Oracles.  Arragoth is coming!

The Halflings have never forgotten the horrors visited upon their
land in the times when Arragoth, the Son of the Fire Gods, reigned
from his Volcanic depths.  The council has no choice.  They give
their blessing to Marsio's scheme.  They agree to seek out a Wizard
to prepare the Shire for the day when Arragoth's Lava Legions invade.

Bill Heartwood stepped out of the shadows and into the life of the
Shire.  At Mayor Redbottom's frightened start Bill held out open hands
in an empty gesture of assurance.  A Wizard's peace is in his heart,
if he has any at all.  "It went well Mayor.  With your help I can
guide the Shire through the coming crisis.  My way is the only way."
