PLAYER 91 - Gothrik

The battle has lasted for hours.  I have lost track of all the horrors dispatched with my greataxe.  I am weary beyond belief, sucking as huge a gasp of air as my lungs with take.  Then, I see it.  I am sure that this was once a human, but it has been twisted beyond all imagining.  Its helm is a skull, bone white, cracked and pitted.  Encased in plates of metal, blood red, from shoulders to cloven hoof.  In its hands is a mace, huge and terrible, topped by another skull; this one like no beast I have ever seen, eyeless and with great horns jutting from its brow.  I roar a challenge and attack, but my wounds prove to be too much and I stumble at the feet of the beast.  Have I finally found the glorious death I have been seeking, falling finally to a truly “worthy” foe?  Its weapon rises and fall too fast for me to dodge or block.  This is the end.  My shame is now expunged.  My only regret is I will not be able to raise another mug with the manling, the Hunter, who follows
 me to write my story so my people can know how I have faced my end.  I watch as the mace descends.  All I see is a flash, and then darkness...

The darkness begins to lighten.  I feel the ache of my wounds.  Not fresh, not sharp, but dull as if partially healed.  I feel softness under me, a bed, and smell the crisp sent of clean linen.  So I am not dead.  I have not atoned.  I open my eyes to take in my surroundings.  The walls are made of some whitish stone that I don’t recognize.  The bed I am lying on smells vaguely of sheep, as if I am on one big bale of wool.  There is nothing else in the room save for a small table next to the bed holding holding a small glass of *fah* water.  

At my noise of disgust, the curtain, that serves as a door to the room, moves, and an old man in a robe enters.  I would call him a human, but there is something different about him, something not quite “right”.

"You are finally awake, I see,"  he says in a language I have never heard before, but understand completely.

"Aye," says I, "How long?"

"I has been six days since you appeared in our midst.  We are happy that you have finally come to us."

"Appeared??? Where in Baldur's name am I?  And what do you mean 'finally come to you'? Who are you???"

"Forgive me, Great One.  I am Farquesh, hetman of the oasis of Tunisla, in the Drylands.  Six days ago, you appeared in our midst accompanied by an intense flash of light.  You gave a mighty roar, buried your axe in the center of the village square, and then collapsed from your wounds.  We bound these wounds and have cared for you here in the castle keep."

"'Great One'?  Who do you think I am?"

"Why, you are our Wizard, just as the prophesy spoke of: 'And among you shall appear one who is not of the People, but shall become the greatest of the People.  He will know nothing of majiks, but shall become the greatest of Wizards.  He will be much alone, but will lead the People to glory.'"

"Well at least they got that right.  I am no Wizard.  It’s not as if I can just snap my fingers a
bring forth any magicks," I said as I demonstrated by snapping my fingers.  But instead of the sharp snap that I expected, sparks of blue and green emerged and began to play along my fingers.  I stared at my hand in awe as they dances and flickered without harm.

Farquesh bowed with a sly smile.  "Indeed you are the one we were promised.  Is there anything I can get for you?"

"Ale," I croaked, "as big a mug as you can find."

"I am truly sorry," he said, shaking his head.  "We have no ale."

"Then go to the nearest tavern and get some."

"I am afraid you don’t understand.  We have no tavern nor any ale in the village.  We have nothing against it, you see, but we, Sand People, just do not make or buy any."

I waved him away then, stilled bewildered by the signs of magick on my hands.  He bowed again, and retired, leaving me in peace to contemplate my new situation.

So here I am, Gothrik, Wizard of the Sand People.  We’ll just have to see how far I can take this.  But first, I have got to get these people to build a Tavern…
