THE EXPLORATIONOf The Caves
An unlikely trio, an elven wizard and two renown Dwarven heroes, sat around a crude wooden table in the recently constructed tavern of the town, a huge hit among the townsfolk,, who did so love there ale. Not only was the tavern a place to meet and, more importantly, drink ale, but it had become the center of the town. It was where the folk came to socialize, conduct business, gather and spread the latest gossip, relax after a long days work, and occasionally, have a bite to eat. It had become the preferred gathering place among the dwarves, and at least a handful of the townsfolk could be found their at any time of day or night. A Dwarven serving girl baring a tray laden with tea and ale came over and lightly set the heavy bourdon in the center of the table. The two dwarven heroes sitting across from the wizard quickly grabbed the large pare of foaming tankards of ale upon it, and enthusiastically set to draining them. The tea, of course, was for him. The wizard gave a nod to the serving girl, who gave a small bow in return and retreated with the tray in hand, only to return minutes later with an enormous jug of frosty ale in her arms. She first refilled the tankards, to the grins of satisfaction of the two dwarves, who seemed to be debating who could drain their tankards the quickest, before setting the heavy jug on the table between the two enthusiastic heroes. A smaller jug of tea was left as well. The pair of dwarves drinking and grinning merrily across the table from him couldn't be more different for two members of the same race. The old merchant was tall for his kind, with leathery skin and large, thick fingered, gnarled hands. A long silvery beard flowed down his chest and beneath the table. As he watched, the old dwarf hauled up the end of his long beard and wiped the foam of ale from his upper lip. The new comer, on the other hand, was on the short side for a dwarf, younger and leaner, though still rather stocky, as were all of his kind. A short thick coal-black beard, growing down to only mid chest, covered his rough face. His rough skin was oddly darker for one of his race and his arms ended in smallish, unnaturally long fingered hands. Rumor had it that he was part underdwarf, but no one spoke of that rumor... out loud. The black bearded dwarf's odd appearance no doubt drew many looks and comments, if one dared to express them, and those who knew him did not do so. The wizard cleared his throat softly, putting a temporary end to the friendly competition between the dwarves, knowing that sort of sport could go on amongst their race for a very, very Long time. Dwarves were reputed to have a hollow leg and holes in the bottoms of their feet. "Now, let's get to the matter at hand shall we?...I have reviewed your background and qualifications carefully," he said to the black bearded dwarf, "and you come well recommended," he added a slight nod toward the old merchant... At that moment, the messanger he had dispatched to the unit exploring the caves barged into the tavern, looking a bit travel worn and dusty, and came directly over to their table, huffing and puffing. The messenger, a dwarf, looked longingly at the large jug of cold ale sitting on the table. At a nod, the travel weary dwarf grabbed the jug with both hands and attempted to empty its contents down his throat, spilling half of the ale down his beard and legs to puddle on the floor, drawing disapproving looks from the two heroes at the tragic waist of fine spirits. After picking himself up off the floor, the messenger dwarf pulled a, slightly damp, rolled up scroll from a tunic pocket and handed it over to the wizard. Taking the offered scroll, the wizard unrolled it and smoothed it out on the table, where he quickly scanned it. As he red, his eye brows rose several times, and when he finished, a slight smile twisted his lips. He rerolled the parchment in front of him and tucked it into a pocket of his robes. From another pocket he pulled a fresh parchment, and from yet another, a long quill, tip glistening darkly with ink. With more haste than was customary for him, he wrote a quick reply in the Dwarven tongue. When finished, he drew a burning candle from an inner pocket of his robes and placed it on the table. Neatly rolling up the parchment, he pored a bit of the hot wax on to the scroll to seal it, pressing his ring to the hot wax as it cooled. He than calmly replaced the quill in a pocket, one that seemed too short to contain the long object, and the candle back into its inner pocket, still burning brightly. He handed the scroll to the same messenger who had delivered the first, the dwarf having waited patiently, sucking spillt ale from his beard, as his master wrote the new orders. "You are hired," he said to the black bearded dwarf, "You will take your orders from him," nodding at the old silver bearded merchant. He then rose from the table and, nodding in acknowledgement, left the tavern. Momentarily rendered speechless, the two Dwarven heroes exchanged puzzled looks. Then, in unison, the dwarves shrugged as one, waving their hands in the air, loudly called for a fresh jug of ale.Contact Raistlen at aronfx@tampabay.rr.com

A well dressed minotaur purposely strides down the corridor toward an ornate double-door guarded by two huge, particularly well-muscled, minotaur warriors. At the approach of the lone minotaur, the two guards position their well-crafted battle axes so to deny access to the doors. Flushed and indignant, the well-dressed minotaur stiffens and glares at the two huge guards. "Step aside. I must see the hal-" "Wizard Kyrath wishes to see no one." Interrupted the guard on the right, putting a little emphasis on the title Wizard. Affronted, the lone minotaur angrily questions, "You deny me? Do you know-" Once again the guard on the right interrupts, "Wizard Kyrath left explicit instructions that he was not to be disturbed by anyone." Anger building to a rage, the well-dressed minotaur started to growl a response when one of the ornate doors opened slightly. Half way up the doors poked out the head of a middle-aged half-elf. "it's alright Captain Toj. Allow high-priest Scronge to enter." said the half-elf in a smooth, calm voice. "As you wish Wizard Kyrath." responded Toj and both guards retracted their blocking battle axes. The half-elf opened the door fully, "Enter High-priest Scronge." and then turned and walked away from the door, not waiting nor looking back to make sure he was being followed. Grinding his teeth, glaring at the back of the half-elf, and then casting a glare at the two guards, Scronge stalked in after the half-elf and closed the door. Entering a room that is clearly a study, Scronge quickly glanced around and then settled a stare at the Half-elf standing behind a desk with a number of open books and parchment upon it. "My priests and clerics tell me of countless rumors regarding the surrounding empires building up fortifications and raising armies. As war wizard, what do you intend to do about it." "Rumors they are not, but rather, fact." stated Kyrath calmly. Blinking and then glaring, Scronge retorts "You mean you know of this? And you sit here doing nothing?" The half-elf's eyes harden and narrow, with a voice low and edged with ice, he returns, "High-priest Scronge. You know fully well the High Council, in exchange for my magical talents, gave me complete control over the defense and growth of this empire, provided I did not interfere with minotaur traditions and culture outside of war. If it were not for me a year ago, this empire would grace the pages of history, should anyone have cared enough to write it down. Minotaurs make excellent warriors, but are lacking when it comes to the arcane arts." With that said, Kyrath turned and walked to the window. Scronge snorted, but held his tongue. After a moment of gazing out the window at the city below him, and the mountains in the distance, Kyrath resumed speaking. "not only do I know that the surrounding empires are building themselves up, but in fact, there are 99 others out there in this vast world attempting to do the same thing as us. That is why knowledge is essential and allies help in that as well as in other ways. For example, Gorcalash and bakkracken, leaders of orkish empires, Mirrorcat and Tink, leaders of desert empires, Adaron, as I am well sure you are aware of, and even Raistlin, a leader of a hill dwarf empire are among those I consider allies and benefit from our arrangements." Turning to look directly at Scronge and catching his expression, Kyrath says with a raised eye brow and a rye grin, "Find my selection of allies strange? Certainly no stranger than a minotaur empire led by a half-elf." Waving away any objections, Kyrath stares at the much larger minotaur with a deadly serious intent. "The time is coming soon. You, as High-priest, must keep up the morale and make sure the people are ready. We have come a long way, but have much further to go. We must strengthen and build our empire, extending our influence far and wide. We will be mighty once more!"

High atop some mountains in a distant land, sits the Minotaur. They are a stoic creature, fierce in battle, and tirelessly toile to build their empire. Adaron the unconditional ruler of this tireless band of warriors looks out from the parapet of the meager castle. He looks down on the peasants tirelessly toiling in the mountain soil, pulling as much harvest from the land as possible. He is thinking to himself ""Soon we will transform this land beyond site to an incredible, and vast empire. This is what it starts with, the simple peasant. They do not even fathom their role. They are the cogs that make and run the machines of war, and the construction of a great and mighty empire. They are nothing without me, and they know it." After the counsel of eleven named me unconditional ruler and resigned all governing authority to the all mighty Adaron, placing themselves as counsel to the all mighty ruler, serving only at his request He only dismissed three of the members. He thinks "They were old and feeble, I need only the strong." Adaron looks out at a bloody gore splattered caged cart, with carrion birds flying around it eating the gore that is all over the floors, slowly moving out from the castle. "I really hate having to extract information that way from the dissenters, I cannot think of an easier way, and oh it's so effective." Looking back at the peasants in the field he mutters to himself "They know that it is for the good of the empire, we will show them, we will concore them all."

Grilc slipped quietly through the half-open door to the tower, and paused. Listening carefully for any sound, he waited for at least a minute before proceeding through the open lower floor. He slowly climbed a staircase that took him through a trapdoor to the upper level. Poking his head through the opening, he peered around the raised trapdoor, and spotted his master. Reclining in a chair, a rather nondescript orc read a book, obviously completely at ease. Grilc rose, and made his way across the room before prostrating himself at his master's side. "Oh great Gorcalash the brainy, I bring you your mail. Should it please you, I'll leave it here, on this side table." The master glanced up from his book, "Oh, very good, Grilc. And when you are done, I have a new quote that I have just read. You shall write it on my board with the others. The quote is, "The journey of a thousand miles begins when one climbs on the back of one's underlings". As Grilc scurried to write this new wisdom on his master's board of quotes, Gorcalash picked up his mail. Glancing through it, he offhandedly commented, "Ah, good. Here's my next installment of The Proving World Ranker...Seems I'm climbing the charts again. Oh, and here's one from my friend Kyrath the Smarmy, and one from Bakkracken the Annoyingly Pretty. I'll read those later. Grilc, what are the peasants doing today?" "Pretty much the same thing they do every day, my Lord, trying to survive." Grilc mumbled as he finished his writing. Fortunately Gorcalash was not listening, "Ah ha, here's one from Granargendor the Basher...Hmmm, seems that his peasants are rebelling. I always said that his peasants were to uppity. I attribute it to the fact that he doesn't tax them enough. Hmmm, he goes on to request that I put him up for a few months. Grilc, if he comes knocking, please feed him to the peasants. That should make them happy for a while. Everyone likes meat." Grilc shuddered and bowed, though his master still wasn't paying attention. "I'll just be heading downstairs then, master. It's almost time for your lunch. You need your mind at full capacity to keep making your plans for world domination." "Very well, Grilc. Go about your business. Today is a good one, so you may have lunch yourself." Emphatically thanking his master, Grilc exited the room hastily. It wouldn't due to have the master change his mind.

Tink watches from the battle front of Tunisla as the hordes
attack the surrounding shires trying to increase there numbers and the
intake of supplies. She is very nervous at this point worrying about her men
and there families. Would this all goes as planned? And would they be able
to become one strong and united front when it was all over. She was also
worried about the distruction that the battle would cause. Would they be
able to recover and not have to rebuild the entire city. Being the only
female leaders in her group Tink has alot to prove to her people and to the
shires she is now taking on. They must show the new comers they are becoming
part of very close group one that treats everyone equally.
It is now spring and it is a joyous time of year. The oasis is
beautiful this time of year. With the coming of spring comes new life and
new beginnings. There is much work to be done in town. The tavern needs
completing the well needs to be finished and there is a hero to be bought.
Also all must be set up for the towns spring time festival. with all the
new towns people being added the is much work to be done to get things
ready. The spring time crops need to be planted and they need to harvest
the fruits and vegetables for the feastival. It is so far looking like a
very fruitful beinging for this town.

As the sun's light drained from the sky, Mirrorcat took her accustom place atop the parapet of her castle. It is a good beginning, she thought as she looked out over the oasis. Her oasis. Lights were just being lit below in the town, glowing softly from windows and doors. She looked up to watch as the stars took their places in the night sky, a scattering of gems on black silk. A servant appeared to light the torches along the walk. Mirrorcat gestured him away. "No. No torches are to be lit here. Not now. I have told you this. You may light them later. Go."The servant bowed and quickly retreated down the narrow stone stair. Mirrorcat tugged at the sleeves of her robe and returned to her reflections. Yes, indeed a good beginning. However, she wanted more than just this. Thoughtfully, she ran her fingers down the spine of her spell book and let her gaze wander out beyond the town to where the great desert lay in darkness. More than just the desert lay in that darkness. There were other places like this for the taking, treasures concealed and long forgotten, well laden caravans to trade with or raid, and more. The night wind gusted along the parapet and swirled away again back out into the sands. She knew that wind. Wherever it went it would shift the sands, sculpt the dunes, and reshape the land at whim. Mirrorcat smiled, liking that wind. She would do the same. Cradling her spell book in one arm, she jumped lightly from the parapet to the walk. It was time to continue her plans. That desert held more than those sands. She would have its hidden secrets. If, no, when her plans came to fruition, this one oasis would be but a dot on the maps of her empire, though one thought of fondly. A low door set deep into the tower wall swung silently outward at her touch and as she stepped through the portal she heard the long rumbling roar of a sand lion, claming its right to rule, echo over the land.
